The federal government needs to end the practice of damaging the credit reports of 1.8 million Georgians and 42 million more Americans by ending credit bureau reporting on student loans. Wrong information has been placed on credit bureau files for years. The financial stimulus to 44 million Americans by purging inaccurate information from credit files would be immediate and significant.
This is a bipartisan issue and can be accomplished in the next stimulus bill. At the same time, it's time for the federal government to quit punishing a single class of American citizens by making student loan debt dischargeable under bankruptcy.
