Johnson Congratulates Loeffler, Applauds Kemp;
Calls for Prioritizing Solutions to Student Debt Crisis.

Atlanta, Ga. December 4, 2019 – Dr. A. Wayne Johnson issued the following statement today following the appointment of Kelly Loeffler to the U.S. Senate by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp.

“I want to congratulate Kelly Loeffler on being appointed to represent Georgia in the United States Senate. Johnny Isakson is a friend to all the people of Georgia and a statesman. He has represented our state and served our nation with class and distinction. Johnny leaves big shoes to fill, but I am optimistic that Kelly is up to the task.

“I stepped down from my position in President Trump’s Administration because I have a desire to serve my home-state of Georgia and its residents. Though I won’t be in the Senate next year, my desire to serve remains. Nearly two million students in Georgia, along with their families, are struggling with student loan debt and our leaders in Washington need to advance a bold, comprehensive, decisive plan to fix this crisis. I urge soon-to-be Senator Loeffler to devote significant time and energy to overhauling higher education financing so students don’t graduate with a diploma and a mountain of debt; or worse yet, take on life-long debt obligations without completion of a degree.

“I also want to commend Governor Brian Kemp for the open and transparent process by which he selected Senator Isakson’s successor. It brought out the best in our state. I was honored to be counted among the hundreds of Georgia residents from all walks of life, who were united by their desire to represent our state in the world’s greatest deliberative body – the United States Congress. Before deciding whether to run for elective office in 2020, I will be taking time to reflect and talk with Georgians about how I can best serve our great state, our nation, and our students.”
